Overview
Main Reef is Hikkaduwa's most consistent break, a flat coral reef facing the A-Frame Guest House that serves up fun, if generally slow, lefts and rights.
When It Works
The reef draws swell from south through west, with southwest the standout direction, and it holds a wide window that works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 3 m / 10 ft. Waves break over dead coral and stay fairly consistent, though they can warble and lose their shape when the wind picks up.
Wind and Tide
Look for northeast offshore wind to smooth it out. It favours low to mid tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is an intermediate wave, and the lineup gets very busy when it's working. Localism has flared up here over the years, so go easy and give others room. Mind the urchins, rips, and rocks around the shallow coral.
