Maitencillo is a beach break over a 2 km stretch of coarse, golden sand, and the rivermouth is usually where you will find the best A-frames when the swell is small. Waves peel both left and right, and the northern end, known as Abanico, produces some real quality at times, especially in the clean morning glass.
When It Works
The break draws swell from south through west, with a southwest swell the best match. It is usable from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft, handling anything up to a bit overhead. It is a highly consistent spot, so you can count on it turning on regularly when the swell is running.
Wind and Tide
Look for an east offshore wind to clean things up. The beach works across the tide, but it is generally best around mid tide, with a rising tide the better call.
Local Tips
This is an approachable, beginner-friendly beach, though it is worth keeping an eye on the longshore drift while you are in the water. Expect a busy lineup on the good days.
