Makapu'u is arguably Oahu's best bodysurf and bodyboard spot, known for long, trundling lefts that end in a huge shorebreak barrel. It breaks over uneven reef and sand and throws both lefts and rights. The Beach Park enforces a no-surfboards policy, which the lifeguards police, but stand-ups are allowed to take on the heavy, barreling right that peels over the lava shelf at Makapu'u Point, in front of Sea Life Park.
When It Works
The spot is consistent and holds waves year-round, but it's at its best in winter with any east swell and opposing winds. It draws swell from northeast through southeast, with northeast (NE) the best match. It works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft. On bigger northeast swells, nearby Rabbit Island is also worth a look.
Wind and Tide
Look for southwest (SW) offshore wind. It can work through low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
Makapu'u is approachable for beginners, though strong currents run through here and keep the lifeguards busy. Expect a moderately busy lineup when it's working.
Access
There are restrooms, showers, camping, and a lifeguard on hand. Parking is easy, with big lots offering free and paid options alongside roadside spaces.
