Makka's Surf Forecast Guide

Overview

Makka's is a left-hand reef point on the southeast coast of Jamaica, near Yallahs, and it serves up one of the longest rides on that stretch of coast. The wave peels left over a rock ledge and sand, and it's a quality setup that has often hosted contests. It can also hold sizeable hurricane swells.

When It Works

Makka's pulls in swell from east to south (E-S), with southeast (SE) the pick of the bunch and the direction that produces those very long, connecting lefts. It works from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 4.6 m / 15 ft, and it loves size, handling anything up to triple overhead and bigger with ease. The point catches most east swells and is moderately consistent, really coming into its own through the winter when cold-front swells wrap into the Caribbean. Spring and autumn deliver too, with the main windows running November to March and August to September.

Wind and Tide

The point is offshore on a north (N) wind. It's prone to early-morning blow-outs in summer, so dawn isn't always the safe bet that time of year. Tide-wise it can work through most of the range, with a rising tide generally the better call.

Local Tips

This is a shortboard wave suited to intermediate and expert surfers, and not a spot for beginners. Expect a quiet lineup that can feel a little reserved. Keep an eye on the reef.

Access

Parking is easy: pull up to free roadside parking right at the break. Once you're out there, expect a bit of a paddle.
