Malabar Surf Forecast Guide

Malabar, also known as Long Bay, is a left-hand reef break over uneven reef. The lefts get sucky and hollow at low tide before fattening out as the tide pushes in. It's a break for expert surfers who are comfortable reading a shifty reef.

When It Works

Malabar draws swell from east to south (E-S), with southeast (SE) swell the best match. There's a catch on the more southerly angles: south and southeast swell has to be big to wrap in and reach the reef. It works from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft, and it's a somewhat inconsistent spot, so you'll want to time your paddle out to a solid pulse.

Wind and Tide

Look for northwest (NW) offshore wind to groom the faces, and the break also stays clean out of any northerly wind. It works across low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call. Expect the hollow, sucky lefts early on low water, softening as the tide fills in.

Local Tips

This is an expert-only wave. The lineup runs busy and often gets crowded when swells max out the more exposed spots nearby and everyone funnels in here. Watch for sea urchins lurking on the reef, and note that water quality can be dubious.

Access

There are restrooms, showers, a lifeguard, and a surf shop on hand. For parking, you've got a car park with free parking, along with paid and roadside options.
