Malé Surf Forecast Guide

Overview

Malé is the main surf option in the Maldivian capital, and Raalhugandu is the break in town, one of the most consistent and powerful waves in the Maldives. It peels both left and right over uneven reef, tucked right against one of the most built-up coastlines you'll ever surf.

When It Works

The wave draws swell from southeast through south, with southeast (SE) the best match, and consistency is one of its real strengths. It's usable from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft. At low tide it really wedges up. When it maxes out on big southeast swells, surfers spread to nearby options: the treacherous lefts of Rats on the backside corner of the island, shallow rights over on Vilingili in the biggest swells, and a seldom-surfed left beside the runway on Hulhumalé, where a deadly tail section and difficult access keep most people away.

Wind and Tide

Look for west offshore wind. It works best on low and mid tide, with a rising tide the better call. At high the massive coastal tetrapods lining the beach mess the waves up, so time your session around lower water.

Local Tips

This one suits intermediate surfers. Expect a very busy lineup made up of a large, almost entirely local crew that has grown increasingly territorial, partly because neighbouring resort islands shut them out of those line-ups. Many feel Raalhugandu is effectively their one wave, so if you paddle out, give the locals real respect and think about how you'd feel losing access to your own home breaks.

Access

There's roadside parking, plus restrooms and a surf shop nearby.
