Malindi Reefs is a cluster of quality right-hand coral reefs off the Kenyan coast, facing east and bending almost any swell around a run of coral corners. There are four outside reefs, the furthest sitting about 3 km offshore, and the whole zone falls inside a protected marine park.
When It Works
The reefs draw swell from northeast through southeast (NE-SE), with southeast (SE) the best match for lining up those right-hand corners. It works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft, and it stays moderately consistent, so you can count on rideable windows without it turning on every day.
Wind and Tide
Look for west (W) offshore wind to clean up the faces. The reefs can work through low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide the better call.
Local Tips
This one suits intermediate surfers comfortable riding over live coral. Expect a fairly quiet lineup when it works.
Access
A boat ride is essential to reach the reefs. The most popular wave sits about 1 km from the long jetty, while the outer reefs stretch further offshore inside the marine park.
