Mangahume is a right-hand point that breaks over an uneven reef on the Taranaki coast. It throws challenging, hollow rights and is strictly an advanced wave, but when it lines up the quality is genuinely good. Rips and rocks come with the territory, so this one is best left to surfers who know how to handle a heavy point setup.
When It Works
The point draws swell from south through west-southwest to northwest (S-WSW-NW), with southwest swell the best match. On a southwest pulse the take-off jacks up fast and hollow, so you want to be comfortable with a late, steep drop. It works from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 3.7 m / 12 ft and is moderately consistent, giving worthwhile windows without turning on every day.
Wind and Tide
Look for a northeast offshore wind to clean it up. The point breaks on mid and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is an expert-only wave. Rips, rocks and a shifting take-off all demand real experience, and lining up gets trickier as the size jumps, where local knowledge for the paddle-out and positioning really pays off. The lineup tends to stay fairly quiet.
Access
Getting in takes some effort. Park near the small stream on the roadside, then walk down along the creek to the beach, where the right-hand point is waiting. Parking is free. The surrounding land is private property with a gated cliff-top road, so stick to the river access and don't cross private ground.
