Mangawhai Heads is a river mouth break that peels over sand and pulls in both waves and crowds. A spit of rocks shapes the sandbanks at the regulated river mouth to create some of the best lefthanders on this coast, with a bonus right that runs back into the river. When the swell drops, there's more fun to be found on the north side of the rocks.
When It Works
The break draws swell from the north through to the east, and northeast swell is the best match. By east coast standards it's a consistent spot, so it fires often. It's usable from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 3.7 m / 12 ft, and it comes into its own on solid northeast swells.
Wind and Tide
Look for west offshore wind. The break can work through low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This one suits competent, intermediate surfers. Expect a busy lineup when it's on, and on the best days it can get a little competitive, so it pays to be comfortable holding your own in the pack.
