Overview
Manhattan Beach Municipal Pier is a popular beachbreak, with peaks breaking over sand on either side of the pier and offering both lefts and rights. The spot carries real history as a seedbed of surf culture, the place where Dale Velzy first put ten toes over the nose of his board in 1951.
When It Works
The break draws swell from south through west-southwest to northwest (S-WSW-NW), with west (W) swell the best match. It works from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft and stays consistent through the year. Large, lined-up swells tend to close it out, so peakier swells are the better call, especially from the southwest.
Wind and Tide
Look for east (E) offshore wind. It handles low, mid, and high tide, essentially anything short of an extreme high, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
Expect a very busy lineup when it works. Be aware of commercial pollution from nearby industries.
Access
Access is at the foot of Manhattan Beach Boulevard, with metered paid parking and a car park nearby. Facilities include restrooms, showers, lifeguards, and a surf shop.
