Overview
Maroubra is a sand-bottomed beach break and one of the most consistent of the city beaches. There's a wave here in just about any swell, with lefts peeling at the northern end, peaks running through the middle, and rarer rights off the reef at the southern end. The headlands at either end lend a bit of shelter from north or south winds.
When It Works
Maroubra draws swell from northeast through east-southeast to south (NE-ESE-S), and a northeast swell suits it best. That's when the northern end fires up its lefts, classically on a summer NE swell, while the middle throws peaks in almost anything. It's very consistent, so you can usually count on finding a wave. The break is usable from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 3.7 m / 12 ft.
Wind and Tide
Look for a west offshore wind to groom the faces. Maroubra can work through low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is a beginner-friendly beach, and the peaks through the middle leave plenty of room to find your feet. Expect a very busy lineup when it's on, and the vibe in the water isn't always the most welcoming, so read the crowd and wait your turn. Water quality can be poor here too.
Access
You'll find a car park with free parking, along with paid and roadside options. Facilities run to restrooms, showers, a surf school, and a surf shop, and lifeguards patrol the beach.
