Overview
Maruki is one of the better lefts in Japan, a reef set-up in Kamogawa that breaks over an uneven bottom of rock and sand. When it lines up, it offers steep drops, barrels, and walls you can really work.
When It Works
Maruki draws swell from northeast through southeast (NE-SE), and it comes into its own on a northeast (NE) swell that can spoke in and unfurl along the reef. It is usable from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 5.5 m / 18 ft, a wide range with two very different faces: on smaller days you get the punchy, ripable version with barrels on offer, while at the top end it breaks up to triple overhead and getting back out becomes tricky. Consistency is moderate, so it will not be firing every day, but the windows are worth tracking.
Wind and Tide
Look for a north (N) offshore wind. It breaks across low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call, and the smaller, more playful shape tends to show at lower water.
Local Tips
Maruki pulls in the best surfers, so even with a take-off zone spread across the reef, getting your share of waves can be hard, and the lineup runs very busy when it is on. It is a wave for intermediate surfers; beginners are better off on the beachbreaks closer to shore.
