Overview
Mason Bay is a remote, west-facing beach break on Stewart Island, reached by a one-hour boat ride from the mainland. The waves break over sand and peel both left and right, giving you peaks to work with in either direction.
When It Works
The bay draws swell from the south through west, with southwest (SW) the best match. It works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft, so there's a decent window between too small and too big.
Wind and Tide
Look for offshore wind from the east (E) to clean things up. The beach can work through most of the tide, across low, mid, and high, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
The forgiving sand-bottom peaks make this a friendly spot for beginners. With more bird watchers than surfers on the island, you can count on a quiet lineup with plenty of room to yourself.
Access
Camping is available if you want to stay close and make the boat trip worthwhile.
