Overview
Matagorda sits on the peninsula halfway between Galveston and Port Aransas, and it produces the best barrel in northern Texas. The deep water of the Colorado River inlet channel funnels swell onto shallow sandbars, so pushy waves jack up fast over just a foot or two of water. Expect fast, explosive peaks that break both left and right, with steep drops and genuine barrels on offer. It is the most consistent and powerful wave on the upper Texas coast.
When It Works
Matagorda draws swell from northeast through east-southeast to south, with east swell the best match. It works from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft, and it stays consistent through spring and autumn. On big east swells, a good peak also fires off the jetty on the south side of the river mouth, reached by paddling across the river.
Wind and Tide
Look for northwest offshore wind; north and west-northwest winds also work when there is swell. It breaks across low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
The punchy, shallow waves suit intermediate surfers and reward a shortboard. The lineup stays fairly quiet and can feel reserved, so show respect to the locals. Crowds spread out across the main peaks, though the south jetty has a small takeoff zone that can bunch up.
Access
Getting here is easy but remote, with a car park offering free parking alongside paid, roadside, and restricted options. Watch for a shallow bottom and strong rips around the river mouth, and keep an eye out for gators if you paddle the river channel.
