Overview
Matapalo is a right-hander on the Osa Peninsula, just south of Drake's Bay and across the Golfo Dulce from the world-class left at Pavones. It isn't one wave but a scattered series of them, breaking over sand and rock as a mix of reef and point. Three named breaks sit along this stretch: Cabo Matapalo, Backwash and Pan Dulce, each moody in its own way, with quality and size shifting from one swell to the next. It can be inconsistent, but when the setup lines up it delivers genuine right-hand bliss, and the water here is beautiful.
When It Works
The spot draws swell from south through southwest, and that's the window worth watching. It works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 4.6 m / 15 ft, so there's room for anything from a head-high day to something well overhead. Spring, autumn and winter are the seasons to plan around.
Wind and Tide
Look for north-northeast offshore wind, with a workable wind window running from north to northeast. It breaks best on low and mid tide, and a rising tide is generally the better call.
Local Tips
Bring a shortboard, a fish or a gun depending on the size of the day. The inside points stay fairly tame and suit intermediate surfers, while the outer breaks are for well-experienced surfers only, both for the paddle and for the underwater boulders out there. Expect a quiet lineup and a somewhat reserved atmosphere in the water, so humility and respect go a long way.
Access
A 4x4-only road runs down to a beachside campsite, with sparse accommodation in the area. Most people park along the road and follow a winding trail out to the three breaks. A few private houses have started blocking road access to Pan Dulce, but you can still walk in along the beach. Hiring a boat from Pavones is another way in.
