Matunuck Surf Forecast Guide

Overview

Matunuck is one of Rhode Island's standout reef and point zones, sometimes called the West Coast of the East Coast. The surf splits into three main breaks running east to west. Deep Hole is a speedy left that comes alive at low tide. Trestles is an A-frame peak with hollow rights and zippy lefts at lower tides. The Point is a well-defined peak with a short, bowly right and a long, rippable left that links into an inside bowl on the incoming tide. All three break over cobblestone and boulder reef and can handle well-overhead swell.

When It Works

The three peaks read swell direction a little differently: The Point favors southeast swells, while Trestles and Deep Hole lean toward east swells, and all of them still fire on south swells. Overall the zone draws swell from east-southeast to south (ESE-S) and works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 3 m / 10 ft. It's an autumn and winter spot, with the prime window running September through December, and the reef holds good-quality waves when everything lines up.

Wind and Tide

Look for north-northwest (NNW) offshore wind, with a workable wind window stretching from west-northwest through north to northeast (WNW-N-NE). It breaks best on low and mid tide, and a rising tide is generally the better call. Once the tide fills in toward high, the waves tend to get slower and fatter.

Local Tips

Matunuck suits intermediate and expert surfers, and it takes a range of boards, from shortboards and fish to funboards and longboards. Expect a busy lineup when it's on, packed with surfers and kayakers alike, though the atmosphere tends to stay friendly. When it gets big, rip currents and tough paddle-outs come with the territory.
