Mawgan Porth Surf Forecast Guide

Mawgan Porth is a funnel-shaped, cliff-lined bay breaking over sand, with fun peaks that offer both lefts and rights. The stream running down the beach can build some nice little sandbanks, the lefts tending to form along the southern edge and the rights at the northern end.

When It Works

The bay is at its best in small to medium swells and comes alive at lower tides, when the beach opens out. It draws swell from west-southwest to west (WSW-W) and is usable from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft; push much beyond that and it tends to close out. Autumn and winter, roughly September to February, are the prime months. The waves here are more fun than serious, but the low-tide banks can deliver enjoyable, playful surf.

Wind and Tide

Look for an east (E) offshore wind to clean things up. It works through low and mid tide, with a rising tide generally the better call. Higher tides tend to suffer from backwash, so time your session around the lower half of the tide.

Local Tips

With mellow peaks and an easy paddle out, Mawgan Porth suits beginners and intermediates, and it takes everything from shortboards and fish to funboards, longboards, and bodyboards. It long had a reputation as an escape from the Newquay crowds and stays noticeably less crowded than the breaks to the south, though it has grown more popular and gets busy through the summer. The lineup is usually fairly quiet with a relaxed, easygoing feel. Keep an eye out for rips.

Access
