Merewether Surf Forecast Guide

Overview

Merewether is the home of Newcastle surfing, a powerful right-hander that breaks over a mix of uneven reef and sand. The southern reef, known as Ladies, is the standout, turning heavy and powerful once there is size and drawing experienced surfers out to Ladies and the Bombie further out. There are lefts on offer too, along with more barreling peaks up the beach at Dixon Park.

When It Works

The break draws swell from the northeast through east-southeast to south, with an east swell the best match. Ladies can handle plenty of juice, reaching triple-overhead faces in a heavy east-southeast swell. It is usable from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 6.1 m / 20 ft and is moderately consistent. When it is on, roll in, find the barrel, hit the lip and wait for the inside section to unfold.

Wind and Tide

Look for a west offshore wind. Merewether works across low, mid and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call, and lower tides won't hurt either. A little south in the wind is fine, though summer onshores tend to mush it up.

Local Tips

Merewether suits intermediate surfers, but it becomes a heavy, powerful wave once it has size. The lineup gets very busy, and the pack at Ladies takes no prisoners, so getting a wave off them is often the main challenge.

Access

There is a car park with free parking, plus paid and roadside options nearby. Facilities include restrooms, showers, a surf shop, and lifeguard cover.
