Overview
Merimbula is a world-class rivermouth left that peels along a sandbar at the north end of the bay, across from Pambula, breaking over sand. It usually switches between a rippable wall and tube sections that pop up along the bar, which stretches from around 200m on an average day to almost double that when it's on.
When It Works
The left comes into its own on southeast (SE) swell and will take anything from east to south (E-S). Sitting over a more stable sandbar makes it more dependable than nearby setups, though it can still be somewhat inconsistent. It's usable from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 3.7 m / 12 ft.
Wind and Tide
Any northerly cleans it up, so look for north (N) offshore wind. It breaks through low and mid tide, with a rising tide generally the better call. Keep an eye out for a racing rip on dropping tides.
Local Tips
It's best suited to intermediate surfers who are comfortable with long paddles. Expect a busy lineup, and summer holidays can get packed, though the long waves, long paddles and rip help spread everyone out. Be aware that large sharks feed in the rivermouth, and boats punching in and out through the waves are a genuine hazard.
Access
There's a car park with free parking, plus paid and roadside options nearby. On land you'll find restrooms, showers, a lifeguard, a surf school and camping.
