Messanges is a classic Landes beach break, throwing up peaks over sand that swing both left and right. Like much of this coast, it runs through every mood: crumbly onshore mess on a bad day, clean A-frame barrels on a good morning, all down to how the sandbars have shaped up. It is a forgiving, sandy setup that gives beginners plenty of room to learn.
When It Works
The bank draws swell from west through north, with a west (W) swell the best match for lining up those A-frames. It stays fairly consistent, so there is usually something to ride. Messanges works from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft, small enough for mellow days and big enough to hold real size before it gets unruly.
Wind and Tide
Look for an east (E) offshore wind to clean up the faces. The beach works across low, mid, and high tide, though a rising tide is better. Tide reshapes the set-up quickly here, and it often sits a bit deeper at high, breaking closer to shore or not at all, so time your session on the push.
Local Tips
Expect a moderately busy lineup when it is on. The campsite at Le Vieux Port just to the south feeds the peaks, so the better banks can get crowded when everything lines up.
Access
Getting in is easy, with a short walk over the dune from the car park. Parking is free but height restricted, with a spot for campervans tucked back in the trees. You will find restrooms, showers, camping, and a lifeguard, plus a surf school and surf shop.
