Mimiwhangata Bay Surf Forecast Guide

Mimiwhangata Bay is a sand-bottomed beach break on Northland's east coast, tucked south of Helena Bay and north of Whangarei. It breaks both left and right, and when it comes together the bay throws up multiple peaks with strong, organised, fun waves.

When It Works

The bay draws swell from northeast through southeast, with a southeast (SE) swell the best match. It works from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft, so there is a wide window of usable size to play with. Expect moderately consistent surf rather than something that fires every day. Any east swell tends to wake up several peaks across the beach at once.

Wind and Tide

Look for a northwest (NW) offshore wind to clean things up, though the beach stays workable through a broader westerly window. It can break across low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.

Local Tips

This is a friendly, beginner-suitable beach break, and the shifting peaks give everyone room to find a wave. Expect a moderately busy lineup when it is on. If you want more space, walk south to Paraparea for quieter, quality surf.

Access

Reaching the break takes some effort: you cross private farm land to get out to Okupe beach, which means asking permission and paying to walk through. From Whangarei, head north on Western Hills Drive (State Highway 1), turn right onto Russell Road, right onto Pigs Head Road, left onto Kaiikanui Road, then right onto Mimiwhangata Road and out to Okupe beach, finishing on foot. There is camping here, with a nice campsite on the westside beach, and parking is paid.
