Whananaki North, known locally as The Bar, is a rivermouth left that breaks over sand and rates as a genuinely good wave when it turns on. It's a rare bird that only lines up occasionally, but when the sandbars are working they throw out long, peeling lefts with nice whackable sections.
When It Works
A southeast swell is the signal that The Bar is on. It draws swell from east to southeast (E-SE), with southeast (SE) the optimal direction. It works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft, though anything over 6 ft closes out. Conditions here can be somewhat inconsistent, so it pays to wait for the right window rather than count on it.
Wind and Tide
Look for northwest (NW) offshore wind to clean it up. The rivermouth sandbars fire best on low to mid tide, and both rising and falling tides can work. Being a rivermouth, though, it gets rippy on the outgoing tide, so factor that into your session.
Local Tips
This one suits intermediate surfers, with those whackable sections rewarding a bit of experience. Because The Bar breaks so rarely, surfers flock to it when it's on, so expect a busy lineup on the good days. If it's not happening, empty Whananaki South has good beachbreaks on its day.
