Overview
Mirador el Calvario is a sand-bottomed beach break that throws both lefts and rights at the southern end of a long run of peaks stretching along the coastal highway. The waves line up through Cayucal and further south to the mirador, and the setup beside the northern headland can be fun when the swell is small.
When It Works
The break draws swell from south through west-southwest to northwest (S-WSW-NW), with west (W) swell the best match. It's a consistent spot, so waves turn up often, and it works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft.
Wind and Tide
Look for northeast (NE) offshore wind to clean things up. The bank works through most of the tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
When it's small, this is an easy, welcoming wave that suits beginners and every ability level, and you can usually count on a fairly quiet lineup. Once it pushes over head high, though, dangerous rips kick in, so weigh that carefully before paddling out on bigger days.
