Overview
Moose is one of the closest and most accessible spots to Halifax, breaking over an uneven reef in front of the area's giant moose statue. It works both ways, with lefts and rights that can get hollow, and it turns into a decent wave when the swell and wind come together.
When It Works
Moose draws swell from southwest through north to northeast and is usable from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft. Autumn and winter bring the most reliable surf, when storm activity pushes swell toward the coast.
Wind and Tide
Look for northwest offshore wind. The reef favors high tide, and a rising tide is generally the better call.
Local Tips
A shortboard is the board of choice, and the wave is approachable enough for beginners while still offering something for intermediate and more experienced surfers. Expect a busy lineup: weekends and summers can get packed, while weekdays tend to stay quiet. The atmosphere is generally neutral, and it's worth coming prepared for cold temperatures through winter.
