Morro Rock surf guide

Morro Rock is a well-known surf spot located in Morro Bay, California. It features a distinctive rock formation that is a landmark for surfers and nature lovers alike. The beach here has gone through beach nourishment to maintain its sand levels, which helps create more consistent surf conditions. While it can get crowded, especially on good days, there’s still plenty of space to spread out, especially if you head north along the beach.

The surf here is pretty decent, particularly when the swell is big. You can expect powerful beach breaks that come to life, and when the swell size drops to around 2 feet (0.6 meters), it still manages to be fast and fun. Long, mushy lefts break off the Rock, but you might also find some right-handers. The optimal swell direction is from the Northwest, and it can handle swells from both the South and North. Conditions generally favor low to mid-tide, but it can work at high tide too. When it comes to wind, an easterly breeze is preferable.

Morro Bay’s entrance can also produce some decent waves during larger swells, and the South Jetty beach breaks become popular with surfers looking for smaller swells. Keep an eye out for jet skis, as they can be a nuisance in the water and affect the overall experience.
