Motels is a consistent left-hand reef break sitting straight in front of Ha'atafu Beach Resort, the main surf hangout. The waves run fairly long, with variable-speed walls that open up room for big turns between the tuck sections before the ride fades out on the reef fringe. It breaks over live coral, so it rewards clean surfing more than forced sections.
When It Works
The break draws swell from south through west, with southwest (SW) the best match. It works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 3.7 m / 12 ft, coming to life on even the smallest swells and staying user-friendly at small to medium sizes. When it gets heavier it can hold up to double overhead, which is territory for advanced surfers. Consistency is a strong point here, so it tends to have rideable waves more often than not.
Wind and Tide
Look for a southeast (SE) offshore wind to groom the walls. It works on mid and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is a good fit for intermediate surfers, thanks to the forgiving shape at smaller sizes. Expect a moderately busy lineup when it's working.
