Motu Hava is a fun hot-dog reef facing the fishermen's inlet, throwing up both lefts and rights over an uneven bottom. The rides are decent until the inside rocks get in the way, and it stays one of the more popular spots around.
When It Works
Swell arrives from southwest to northwest, and northwest is the direction that lights it up best. The reef is usable from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft, and it breaks consistently enough that you rarely turn up to nothing.
Wind and Tide
Look for southeast offshore wind to clean it up. It can work through most of the tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
Beginners can get plenty out of the peak here, though the inside rocks are worth keeping in mind on longer rides. Expect a moderately busy lineup when it's on.
Access
Parking is free, either roadside or nearby. Te Moana restaurant sits right in front and serves some of the best food on the island, run by respected local surfer Rene.
