Overview
Moya Left is a left-hand reef break that peels over dead coral on the outside coral reef.
When It Works
It picks up more swell than the breaks around it, so it's often the one still working when the surf is small, though it can be inconsistent. The reef draws swell from the south to southwest, with southeast (SE) the optimal direction, and it's usable from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 3 m / 10 ft.
Wind and Tide
Look for northeast (NE) offshore wind. Moya Left is best from mid to high tide, with a rising tide the better call. It's worth avoiding low tide, when the shallow reef drains down to dangerous levels.
Local Tips
This one suits intermediate surfers, and the lineup usually stays quiet. The lagoon current is strong, which makes the paddle back to the beach hard work. If you want a low-tide alternative, the long black sand beach just north of Moya throws up nice peaks, with sandbanks that settle close to the tunnel.
