Mullaghmore Head surf guide

Mullaghmore Head is known for being one of the top big wave surf spots in the world. It attracts a select group of elite, cold-tolerant surfers who are prepared to take on its massive swells. Located in Ireland, it is not for the faint of heart, as it requires a lot of experience and the right gear. The waves here are powerful and can reach sizes from about 3 meters to over 9 meters (10ft to 30ft).

This spot handles swells from the NorthWest and WestNorthWest, with the best conditions occurring on low to mid tides and when the wind comes from the South or SouthWest. The waves break over a sharp, uneven limestone reef, creating a steep and technical left-breaking wave. Surfers looking to tackle Mullaghmore should be equipped with specialized boards such as guns, as well as tow boards when conditions are very heavy. The paddle out is a workout in itself, taking around thirty minutes to get from the rocks to the lineup, so be prepared for a long haul.

Access to Mullaghmore is straightforward, with parking available around the headland. While the wave is a sight to behold and a thrill for those who can handle it, the local vibe is respectful and tight-knit, with surfers looking out for each other. It's important to know your limits here, as the consequences of a wipeout can be severe, given the shallow reef and powerful conditions. If you're thinking about hitting this spot, make sure you're at an expert level and ready for some serious surfing.

Wind certainty

Wind certainty tells you how much the weather models agree on the forecast.

  • High certainty: Models agree closely; forecast is reliable.
  • Medium certainty: Some disagreement; conditions may shift slightly.
  • Low certainty: Models diverge; treat forecast with caution.

We calculate this by comparing wind speed, gust and direction from multiple models (like GFS, ECMWF, Arome, and Harmonie) and seeing how closely they match. They are weighted, meaning that some models count more than others, depending on how good they are for a certain spot.

Forecast Cheat Sheet

Short on time? Focus on wave energy. It’s the best single metric to gauge how big and powerful the waves will be.

Click any table cell to jump to that forecast hour. The map will update with forecast arrows, so you can see if wind and swell direction are lining up.

Use the table sidebar to switch units for height and speed.

Log your surf sessions to compare forecasts with real sessions and sharpen future predictions.

On the map, click a metric label to bring that arrow to the front — handy when arrows overlap.

Models and Updates

Surfnerd blends multiple global and local wind and swell models using advanced interpolation and spatial techniques to create an "ensemble" forecast. Forecasts are refreshed hourly.

Surf Predictions

Our AI-driven algorithm scores surf quality, shown by green, orange, and gray dots. Each forecast hour is rated for wind, swell, and tide quality, then combined into an overall score. Here’s the scale:

Perfect
Good
Average
Bad or No Data

Session logs also feed the algorithm — the more you log, the smarter your forecasts get.
