Nags Head Pier Surf Forecast Guide

Overview

Nags Head Pier is a sand-bottom break on the Outer Banks and a historical hot spot dating back to the 1960s. Like the rest of the coastline here, the sand comes and goes, and it looks like it is building back in again. When the banks are set up it breaks both left and right.

When It Works

It pulls in swell from the south through to the north (S-N), with northeast (NE) its best direction, and it is usable from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft. Consistency is good, and autumn is the standout season as storm swell drives it: tropical cyclones through late summer and fall, then frontal systems and nor'easters into late fall and winter. It is a decent spot overall, and when the north side is working, that is where you will want to be.

Wind and Tide

Look for west (W) offshore wind. It works through low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.

Local Tips

This is a beginner-friendly wave that suits just about any craft, from shortboards, fish, and funboards to longboards, SUPs, skimboards, bodyboards, bodysurfing, and even kiteboards. The lineup stays fairly quiet with a somewhat reserved feel, though it fills in when the sandbars line up. Paddling out is usually straightforward, but the right south swell can make it tough to hold your spot next to the pier.

Access

You will find restrooms, showers, a lifeguard, and a surf shop on the beach. There is a car park with free parking, but skip the pier lot itself and use the nearby beach accesses instead.
