Overview
Nazaré is a global big-wave phenomenon, where a finger of deep water points straight at the beach and funnels some of the largest surfable waves on the planet onto the sands of Praia Norte. Expect huge, heavy, and sometimes hollow beach peaks that are strictly for the insanely brave. It is one of the most challenging stops on the Big-Wave World Tour, and plenty of boards, jet skis, and bodies have been broken here, including the near-drowning of Maya Gabeira. The lighthouse headland gives an incredible vantage point for the crowds who gather to watch the pros take it on when it is big.
When It Works
The peaks break over sand and draw swell from southwest to north (SW-N), with northwest (NW) the best match. It is usable from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 9.1 m / 30 ft and breaks both left and right. Consistency can be somewhat hit or miss, partly because the spot is fully wind-exposed, so the truly giant days do not come around all that often. When it is on, though, giant clean-up sets are guaranteed. In smaller swells you can head north up the beach, and on big swells the main town beach offers a sheltered little wedge.
Wind and Tide
Look for east (E) offshore wind. It can work through low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is expert-only terrain, where strong currents and those giant clean-up sets leave no room for error. Expect a busy lineup of tow crews and paddle-in surfers when it is firing.
Access
There is a car park with free parking alongside roadside parking. Facilities include restrooms, camping, a lifeguard, a surf school, and a surf shop.
