New Smyrna Beach Surf Forecast Guide

Overview

New Smyrna Beach sits on the south side of Ponce Inlet and is about as consistent as surf gets in Florida, arguably anywhere on the East Coast. It rarely goes flat, so when everywhere else is dead you can usually still find a wave here. Expect wedgey A-frame peaks breaking over sand, with rights and lefts along a beach-and-jetty setup. It's a fun playground that's easy to surf but not really a spot for newer surfers. Size can jump dramatically near the Inlet, where a wave that's knee-high along the beach can be several times bigger right beside the jetty.

When It Works

The beach draws swell from north-northeast to east, and it's at its best on northeast to east-northeast swells. As the direction swings more toward the east and east-southeast, the peaks get punchier and more wedging. It works from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft. There are waves year-round, but spring, autumn, and winter deliver the best of it, with fall and winter the standout. On bigger swells at lower tide, the sets often break way out on the far sandbar known as Shark Shallows.

Wind and Tide

Look for east-northeast (ENE) offshore wind, with a workable wind window running from northwest through north to south. The break is best around mid to high tide, with a rising, incoming tide the better call.

Local Tips

This is shortboard territory that suits intermediate and expert surfers. Expect a very busy lineup, since it pulls surfers in from all over, though the atmosphere is friendly. Paddle fitness matters more than usual here just to hold your position in the pack, so give people their space.

Access

You can drive right onto the sand, which makes spreading out easy, but don't park too close to the dunes or you'll be ticketed. Keep an eye out for vehicles moving along the beach.
