Overview
Newport Beach is a long stretch of beachbreak broken up by several short rock jetties, with sand on the bottom throughout. The waves are hollow and peaky, and the setup holds up to a few feet overhead. Some of the best-known sandbars form at the ends of 36th, 54th, and 56th Streets.
When It Works
The banks draw swell from south through west-southwest to northwest (S-WSW-NW), with southwest the best match. It's usable from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft. This is a consistent spot that can be good at any time of year, though summertime south swells are the standout. The peaks offer both lefts and rights.
Wind and Tide
Look for northeast offshore wind. The banks can break through low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is an approachable, beginner-friendly stretch of coast. Expect a very busy lineup when it's working.
Access
There's a lifeguard on the beach and a surf shop nearby. Parking is free but roadside, and finding a spot can be very difficult during summer, on weekends, or when a good swell is running.
