Overview
North Fistral is one of Cornwall's premier beachbreaks, sitting in the heart of Newquay. The peak throws powerful, hollow rides over a sand bottom, with the banks holding up to 8ft. You'll mostly find rights, and they get hollow towards the lower end of the tide, though lefts come through as well. It breaks consistently and usually runs a touch bigger than neighbouring South Fistral.
When It Works
The bank likes west (W) swell best, and picks up anything from southwest to northwest. It's usable from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 4.6 m / 15 ft. Autumn is the standout season, when the setup comes together most reliably. It's a good, consistent beachbreak that occasionally turns on and gets epic.
Wind and Tide
Look for southeast (SE) offshore wind. The beachbreak can work through most of the tide, from low to high, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
It suits intermediate surfers, and the mix of banks handles everything from shortboards and fish to funboards and longboards. Expect a busy lineup when it's working, with a fairly neutral atmosphere in the water. It can get rippy once the surf is overhead, and crowds are the main thing to plan around.
Access
Everything you need is right on the beach: restrooms, showers, a lifeguard, a surf school and a surf shop. Parking runs to a car park and roadside spaces, all paid. To find it, follow the signs to Fistral Beach off the one-way system on Headland Road.
