North Ocean Beach Surf Forecast Guide

North Ocean Beach is the northern stretch of San Francisco's Ocean Beach, running from Kelly's Cove down toward Golden Gate Park. It's a long, exposed beachbreak that peels both left and right over constantly shifting sandbars, and few places in California change as much from hour to hour, day to day, and season to season. When it's on, you get miles of meaty, dark-green offshore peaks anywhere from head-high to well overhead.

When It Works

The bank draws swell from southwest to west-northwest (SW-WNW) and is usable from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 4.6 m / 15 ft. Autumn and winter, roughly October through January, are the prime months. It's a genuinely good beachbreak when everything lines up, but the peaks shift constantly, so even on a good day you're hunting moving targets rather than sitting on one reliable bank.

Wind and Tide

Look for east (E) offshore wind, with a workable window running from northeast to southeast (NE-SE). Tide is the deciding factor here: all that water pushing in and out of the Golden Gate sweeps the beach and reshapes the sandbars through the day. It works on low and mid tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.

Local Tips

This one suits intermediate and expert surfers. The lineup stays friendly but has been getting steadily busier despite the three miles of beach to spread out on. Bring whatever fits the day, from shortboards and guns to longboards, funboards, fish, and bodyboards. Paddling out is a workout, strong when it's solid overhead and often tricky even on smaller days, so pick your moment through the impact zone.

Access

There's public parking at the north and south ends, with street parking in the avenues for the stretch in between.
