Ocean Beach Surf Forecast Guide

Overview

Ocean Beach is three miles of heavy beachbreak on the western edge of San Francisco, widely counted among the best and heaviest beachbreak anywhere, in the same league as Mexico's Puerto Escondido. Locals just call it "The Beach." It picks up nearly every swell and can hold almost any size, simply breaking further out as it grows until getting past the impact zone becomes the real challenge. The peaks are random and constantly shifting, but they stay makeable.

When It Works

Breaking over sand as both lefts and rights, it draws swell from anywhere across the south to north (S-N) window, with west (W) swell the best match. The wave is usable from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft. Autumn and winter are the seasons to target, and consistency is moderate, so expect quality windows when the sandbars and swell line up rather than surf every day. This is a wave for experts: paddling out is hard going when it's solidly overhead, and it can be tough even on the smaller days.

Wind and Tide

Look for east (E) offshore wind. It can work through low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call, while a dropping tide adds hollowness to the peaks.

Local Tips

Expect a busy lineup when it's on, though the atmosphere in the water is friendly. The long beach suits a wide range of equipment, with shortboards, fish, funboards, longboards, and guns all earning their place depending on the size.

Access

There's a car park with free parking alongside roadside parking, with public parking at the north and south ends and in the avenues for the stretch in between. Restrooms and showers are on hand.
