Oak Island is a sand-bottomed beach break on a barrier island in Brunswick County, throwing both rights and lefts along its 14 miles of coastline. It sits in a heavily shadowed stretch behind Cape Fear, which makes it one of the weaker setups in the area, and it needs the right swell and wind combination to be worth the paddle. Most of the rideable surf concentrates around the piers.
When It Works
The break draws swell from south-southwest to south-southeast (SSW-SSE) and is usable from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft. Autumn is the prime window, when late-summer tropical cyclones and later frontal systems feed it; without that setup it tends to underperform. Summer mostly serves up short-period wind chop off southwest winds.
Wind and Tide
Look for offshore wind out of the north-northeast (NNE), with a workable window running from north-northwest to north-northeast (NNW-NNE). It comes in best on mid to high tide, and a rising tide is generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is an approachable spot for beginners and intermediates, and it takes just about any craft, from shortboards and fish to funboards, longboards, SUPs, and bodyboards. The lineup stays quiet and can feel a little reserved.
