Ocean Beach Pier serves up fun beachbreak peaks on both sides of the pier, which happens to be the longest on the West Coast at 2,100 ft / 700 m. The waves break both left and right over sand and can turn hollow now and then. A handy paddling channel runs alongside the rights on the north side, making it easier to get out and back to the peak.
When It Works
The beach draws swell from south through west-southwest to northwest (S-WSW-NW), with northwest swell the best match. It works from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft.
Wind and Tide
Look for southeast offshore wind to clean things up. The peaks can work through low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
Expect a crowded lineup whenever it's breaking, so be ready to share the peaks on both sides of the pier.
Access
You'll find Ocean Beach Pier at the end of Niagara Avenue, with plenty of surf shops close by. There are restrooms, showers, and a lifeguard on hand, plus a surf shop for anything you've forgotten. Parking comes as a car park with free parking or roadside spots.
