Overview
Ogmore-by-Sea is a river mouth break where shifting sandbars shape long lefts on the south side of the flow, with a right peeling off the north side of the rivermouth. The waves break over sand, and the spot rarely picks up much swell, so a good day here is the exception rather than the rule.
When It Works
The break draws swell from southwest through west, and a southwest swell is the best match. It's usable from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft. Since swell is scarce along this stretch, it takes the right setup for the sandbars to come alive.
Wind and Tide
Look for an east offshore wind to groom the faces. It comes into its own around high tide, and a rising tide is generally the better call.
Local Tips
When it's on, expect a busy lineup. Be ready for strong rips too, so keep an eye on the flow off the river.
Access
A powerful rip runs off the river, and a sewage plant sits upstream, which leaves the water quality poor, so pick your days carefully. You'll find a car park with free parking overlooking the wave on the Ogmore side.
