Overview
Old Man's is a rolling right-hander that behaves like a small reef pass, peeling over a mix of sand and rock. The shape is fun rather than critical, though the wave will still throw an occasional lip over a shallow section. Paddling out is light work, and the water is clean.
When It Works
The spot draws swell from east-northeast through southeast to south, and it's usable from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 2.1 m / 7 ft — roughly knee high to overhead. April through October is the window, covering spring, summer, and autumn. Expect a decent wave when it lines up.
Wind and Tide
Look for west-northwest offshore wind, with a workable wind window running from west-southwest to north. That prevailing wind tends to come in side-offshore here, which helps the wave hold its shape. Mid tide is best, and a rising tide is the better call.
Local Tips
This is a well-known beginner spot, and the lineup is busy whenever it's working. It suits every level from beginner through expert, and almost anything goes under your feet: shortboard, funboard, longboard, fish, or bodyboard. The atmosphere can feel a little reserved. With that many learners in the water, other surfers are the main hazard worth watching.
Access
Parking is right at the spot.
