Olowalu is a reef break about six miles south of Lahaina Harbor, tucked around a jetty spit. The bottom is a mix of lava, rock, and coral, and the surroundings stay pristine. It's a decent setup with a genuinely fun left, plus a scatter of right and left peaks nearby to spread the pack out.
When It Works
The main draw is a left that peels off through the summer, coming to life when swells sneak between Lana'i and Kaho'olawe. It pulls in swell from south-southwest to west-southwest (SSW-WSW) and works from 1.2 m / 4 ft to 2.1 m / 7 ft. Both lefts and rights are on offer, and the spot stays ridable across spring, summer, and autumn, with summer the standout window.
Wind and Tide
Look for offshore wind out of the northeast (NE), with a workable wind window running from north to east (N-E). It can break through low, mid, and high tide, though a rising tide is generally the better call.
Local Tips
The lineup tends to stay fairly quiet with a somewhat reserved feel, so expect a mellow crowd even when it's firing. It suits everyone from beginners to experts and takes just about any board, whether that's a shortboard, funboard, longboard, fish, bodyboard, or kiteboard. Paddling isn't too bad, but currents can turn nasty during solid swells, and the reef is the main hazard to keep in mind.
