Ouakam is Senegal's world-class reef, breaking just south of the Les Mamelles lighthouse over uneven reef. The right peels off a well-defined peak, running long and ruler-edged, while the left is fast, crisp and steep. Both directions throw up barrel sections when it's on. It sits in front of the country's biggest mosque and keeps a real African fishing village feel around the lineup.
When It Works
Ouakam draws swell from the southwest through north, with southwest (SW) the best match. It works from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 4.6 m / 15 ft, but it takes a big or long-period northwest swell to wrap in behind the cliff headland and light the reef up. That's a demanding setup, so genuinely good days are rare, only around 20 to 30 times a year despite the wave being moderately consistent once the right swell arrives.
Wind and Tide
The wave sits northeast (NE) offshore, and because the swell wraps in behind the cliff headland, the headland offers great wind protection that usually keeps the lineup smooth. It breaks across low, mid and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is an experts-only wave. The island of exposed rocks and a very tight take-off zone leave little room for error, so it suits confident, experienced surfers only. Expect a busy peak when it fires, and even a small crowd puts pressure on that narrow take-off spot.
