Overview
Outside Grupuk is a lumpy, bombora-style right that breaks over live coral. It can stretch to an impressive height but tends to flatter to deceive, rolling more like a hill than standing up as a wall. An orderly drop and a long, roomy shoulder leave plenty of space to work with.
When It Works
The spot draws swell from southwest through southeast, with a southwest swell the best match. It's usable from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 4.6 m / 15 ft and stays moderately consistent, coming to life on any south swell. It's approachable when small and turns into a more demanding intermediate wave as it grows.
Wind and Tide
Look for northwest offshore wind, with a workable wind window running from northwest through north to east-southeast. It's easily blown out by any southern-hemisphere wind, so keep an eye on the direction. The reef favours mid to high tide, with high tide the best call and a rising tide generally better.
Local Tips
When it's small and orderly, beginners can find their feet on the mellow drop and wide shoulder. Expect a busy lineup when it's working.
