Packery Channel Surf Forecast Guide

Overview

Packery Channel is a sand-bottomed right-hander that breaks along a shallow channel running from the Laguna Madre out to the Gulf of Mexico, on the southern edge of J.P. Luby park. A long jetty, which replaced the old broken J.P. Luby pier, shelters good rolling peaks and shields the sandbanks from the consistent side-shore currents, leaving above-average banks on either side. It is a fun, dependable break with plenty of workable days.

When It Works

The channel draws swell from northeast through east-southeast to south (NE-ESE-S), with southeast (SE) the best match. It works from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft, roughly waist- to head-high, and stays consistent across the season. Spring and autumn are the standout stretches, running from late summer into fall and again from late winter to mid-spring. The two sides of the jetty behave differently: the north side favours longer boards through the summer, while the south side comes alive on northeast and east swells from fall through spring.

Wind and Tide

Look for northwest (NW) offshore wind, with a workable window through north and west when there is swell to feed it. The jetty keeps the peaks clean by blocking south winds on all tides and swells. It breaks across low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.

Local Tips

This is a friendly, beginner-approachable peak that suits a wide range of gear, from shortboards and fish to funboards and longboards. Paddling out is relatively easy for the Texas coast, so take the rip beside the jetty straight to the lineup. As the most consistently crowded break on the Central Texas coast, expect a busy lineup when it turns on, with an easygoing, neutral vibe among the surfers out.

Access

Getting in is straightforward, with beach parking right by the break, a car park, and restrooms on hand. Parking is paid and restricted, so buy a permit before you leave the car to avoid the enforcement patrol.
