Pakaia is a short, intense lava-reef left tucked into the middle of a stunning bay, breaking over an uneven reef. It has the feel of a mutant Pipeline, either turning on perfectly or barely showing depending on the swell. When it is on, the wall holds up and rarely closes out. This is an expert-level wave that rewards surfers comfortable on a punchy reef.
When It Works
Pakaia draws swell from northeast through east-southeast to south (NE-ESE-S), and the exact direction can make or break the session. It works from 1.8 m / 6 ft to 3 m / 10 ft, so it wants some size behind it. Expect it to be somewhat inconsistent, with the best windows arriving when the swell lines up the right way.
Wind and Tide
Look for northwest (NW) offshore wind to clean up the reef. It can work through low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is an expert-only wave over a shallow, uneven reef. The lineup tends to stay fairly quiet, so you rarely have to fight for waves when it turns on.
Access
Getting out is straightforward, with an easy paddle to the reef.
