Overview
Pangandaran Beach is a long crescent of sand lined with what feels like endless beachbreaks. Facing south and southwest, it soaks up all the available swell and is almost never flat. The setup is remarkably similar to the Kuta and Legian beachbreaks in Bali, where the waves break over sand and peel both left and right. Quality comes down to how the sandbanks are shaped and how big the swell is.
When It Works
The beach draws swell from south through west (S-W), with southwest (SW) the best match. It stays consistent and is usable from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft, though anything over about 4 ft tends to close out. One of the nice things here is how the waves change as you move along the sand: they get progressively smaller and cleaner heading up towards the nature reserve, which makes for a natural learning curve. In the dry season, the banks at Airports near the airstrip are the pick, firing best in the early mornings before the southeast trades come up and mess things up.
Wind and Tide
Look for east (E) offshore wind to keep it clean. The beach works on mid and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
With mellow, forgiving waves, this is a great spot for beginners finding their feet. Expect a moderately busy lineup when it's on.

There are lifeguards on the beach, and parking is free.
