Papatowai holds some of New Zealand's biggest waves, breaking over an uneven reef into a long, barrelling right and a heavy, dredging left. Big boils and tendrils of kelp add to the challenge, and there's a stretch of beachbreak nearby at Tahakopa Bay. It has earned a good reputation among the small crew willing to take it on.
When It Works
The reef draws swell from southwest through southeast, with south swell the best match. It works from 3 m / 10 ft to 7.6 m / 25 ft, firmly in big-wave territory. Consistency can be hit or miss, so catching it on takes patience.
Wind and Tide
Look for northwest offshore wind. The reef can work through most of the tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is expert-only terrain, suited to tow-in teams and seasoned big-wave paddlers. Expect a fairly quiet lineup when it's on.
Access
Getting out means a long paddle or a jetski ride, so plan the approach before you commit.
