Overview
Pascuales is a heavy black-sand beachbreak on the Colima coast, Mexico's answer to Oaxaca's famous Puerto Escondido. It throws thick, fast, powerful barrels and terrifying, mutant A-frames with enough force to snap a gun and dent the biggest ego. Pound for pound it's every bit as heavy as Puerto, breaking both left and right over sand. This is an expert wave through and through: when it's pumping, the current is treacherous and the poundings are as brutal as they get, so if you're not fully comfortable in serious surf it won't be your cup of tea.
When It Works
Pascuales draws swell from the south through west, with southwest (SW) the best match, and rears up any south swell straight out of deep water. It's usable from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 5.5 m / 18 ft, running from chest-high days all the way up to giant, quintuple-overhead monsters. It's a consistent break: the rivermouth just to the north keeps the sandbars topped up and the offshore bathymetry acts as a swell magnet, so you're on rideable waves every day through spring and summer, with the season stretching into autumn. When it's on, it's one of the best places in the world to find the biggest, most perfect beachbreak barrels of your life.
Wind and Tide
Look for northeast (NE) offshore wind, and get there early. Almost every day the wind clocks onshore around 11am, after which the lineup becomes an unruly mess unless the swell is small, when the sloppy ramps are an absolute blast. It works across low, mid and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is a wave for experts, and a proving ground for shortboards, guns, bodyboards and bodysurfers alike. Bring a spare board, because Pascuales snaps them. The lineup gets heavy on smaller swells and thins right out when it's big. The atmosphere is friendly, but the locals charge, so paddle out with humility and respect.
Access
There's parking right on the beach and camping on hand. Keep an eye on your gear, though, as thieves are a problem at the campsite.
