Patrick's Point Surf Forecast Guide

Overview

Patrick's Point is a powerful deep-water left point and Humboldt's most popular big-wave spot, breaking over uneven reef. It's a rocky, long, and genuinely heavy wave that holds swells as big as the biggest days at Mavericks. This is not a user-friendly place, but it is a beautiful one. Sets slam into the outer boils and rumble through the boulders to the inside, where a potent peak stands up at Agate Beach, a sandbar hiding a few lethal submerged rocks of its own. That inside section is very hollow and steep, steep enough to snap boards.

When It Works

Patrick's Point is a winter break that draws swell from south through north, and it comes alive on larger west swells. It works from 1.5 m / 5 ft to 7.6 m / 25 ft. Consistency is somewhat spotty, so it takes the right setup to line up, but the windows are worth waiting for.

Wind and Tide

Look for east offshore wind. The wave is best on high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call. As a winter break, it also sits sheltered from south winds.

Local Tips

Given its size and power, this is an expert-only wave. Expect a fairly quiet lineup when it is on.

Access

There are restrooms and showers on hand, and nice camping is available in the park.
