Overview
Pavones serves up some of the longest left-hand rides on the planet, peeling down a point of sand and boulders close to shore. On a solid south swell, rides of up to a kilometre and around three minutes are possible, and it's full-on down-the-line surfing that stretches your bottom turns and top turns far longer than usual. When it's on, it ranks among the best waves anywhere, a run of connected sections that shape and pace all the way down the point. The top of the point, west of the rivermouth, is the main takeoff zone.
When It Works
It draws swell from south through southwest (S-SW), with south the best match, and works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 3 m / 10 ft, handling size easily. Tucked deep inside the Golfo Dulce, it can be inconsistent, but delivers worthwhile windows when a big south swell lines up and penetrates the bay. The best months run from spring through autumn into winter. The wave changes character as it goes: semi-bowly sections up top where you can lay into a few carves, a fast, hollow rivermouth section that demands speed, then a slower taper into the bay.
Wind and Tide
Look for northeast offshore wind. It can work through low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call. When it's smaller it needs a higher tide to link the sections up; once it's a few feet overhead, low tide gets better and hollower.
Local Tips
The wave suits intermediate surfers, ridden on a shortboard, fish, or gun. Expect a busy lineup when it's working, though the atmosphere stays friendly, and when it's really cooking you can take off just about anywhere along the line.

The spot sits right behind the soccer field, with camping nearby and free roadside parking.
